Programs for managing diabetes help people lower their A1Cs and reach target goals—and they also work when patients are teamed with peer partners. A study showed that certified diabetes educators can transition patients to trained peer mentors, who offer coping skills, support, community ties, and a link to clinical care—factors that spell success for weight loss and blood glucose control. This finding may offset the inadequate number of trained professionals available to help the more than 25 million people with diabetes in the United States.
