Miss Teen Arkansas Rallies for Diabetes

Miss Teen Arkansas Erica Brewer and Becki Swindell, manager of the ADA's Central Arkansas office, display a larger-than-life postal stamp raising diabetes awareness.

A Miss Teen International contestant is using her position to raise awareness—and funds—for the American Diabetes Association. Erica Brewer, 16, of Lonoke, Ark., has made diabetes her pageant platform. She calls her efforts Advancing Diabetic Awareness and Management, or ADAM, in memory of her uncle Adam Ball, who died at age 23 from complications of diabetes, she says. In May, Erica hosted her own "Miss Sweetheart" pageant to raise more than $2,500 for the Association.
