Diabetes on the Rise in Youth

Between 2001 and 2009, diabetes rates among people under 20 increased significantly in the United States, according to the largest study ever of childhood diabetes. Type 1 among young children and teens increased by 23 percent, while type 2 increased by 21 percent. Type 1 diabetes remains far more common in this age group, at 2.1 cases per 1,000 people, than type 2, at 0.36 cases per 1,000.
