Calorie-Free Sweeteners Offer Benefits
The American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association jointly released a statement evaluating six calorie-free sweeteners: sucralose (Splenda), acesulfame potassium, neotame (made by NutraSweet), saccharin (Sweet'N Low), aspartame (Equal or NutraSweet), and stevia. They concluded that these six sweeteners could help people reduce their consumption of added sugars, cutting calories and helping with weight control. The statement cautions that it's important, however, not to overeat calories from other sources after consuming alternative sweeteners, which would negate their benefits.
