Hepatitis B Vaccinations Urged for More

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now suggest that people under 60 with diabetes get vaccinated for hepatitis B, a bloodborne virus that can seriously damage the liver. The new recommendation stems from the recognition that diabetes doubles the risk of a hepatitis B infection, and it follows reports of hep B outbreaks in nursing homes among people sharing equipment for testing blood glucose. Vaccination should also be considered for those over 60, although they are less likely to respond to the vaccine.
