Having Your Say on Facebook
Our December article on keeping a food journal attracted many comments when it was featured on the Facebook page of the American Diabetes Association. Excerpts:
Lara Kettell: I keep a journal of everything I eat, inject, or swallow. My diabetes is due to chronic pancreatitis, so food is a huge issue for me. It helps immensely to see what foods affect my [blood glucose]. My docs love that I bring it in. This post reminds me to get back in gear!
Becky Wight: I began keeping a food diary when I was in a local [weight-loss] program. Since leaving the program, I have lost 10 pounds. I write down my daily carbs, if I walk or exercise, and glucose readings as well. This keeps me in check. I guess the word is accountability. Give it a try. What have you got to lose? You might just like it.
Ric West: Using the website fatsecret.com and its free mobile app (iPhone and Android), you can track everything you eat. Grab a snack, simply scan the barcode, and it'll locate it so you can add it to your diet journal. I have been using it and so has my wife. Great way to track carbs, calories, fat, protein intake. Plus, you can track your weight and even include exercise to help show how much you're burning off in calories.
Anthony Little: My iPhone Glucose Buddy tracks my diet carbs, blood pressure, meds, and exercise. I can print it out or e-mail it to my doctor. Glucose Buddy has helped me lower my A1C to 6.0!
Michael Leor Wright: I suggest an iPhone application, Calorie Count. Worth every cent. I religiously mark down my foods every day! It really helps as I am new to diabetes.
Evonne L. Bruce: When it is in black and white, there is no chance of not knowing and having your sugar levels going through the roof. I use a food journal from My Fitness Pal, a free weight-loss site on the Internet. I have lost 14 pounds since September and my sugar levels are wonderful. Use a food journal . . . you will be surprised just how many calories in a day you consume!
Johnny E. Henderson: A journal does help. I have developed a sheet that has times for blood glucose readings, medicinal doses, meals and snacks, carbs, calories, and fats. It helps even when I don't really want to record what I had—do it anyway.
Lizz Evans: It is a good time to begin this and make some new and positive habits to get us through a better and healthier year. Thanks for the great suggestion.
