Time to Test Your Diabetes Risk
Tuesday, March 22, is the 23rd annual American Diabetes Association Alert Day, a wake-up call asking Americans to take the Type 2 Diabetes Risk Test. In 2011, the Association is rallying 1 million people to "Join the Million Challenge" by taking the test from March 22 through April 22. You can take the test online at the ADA's Stop Diabetes site or on its Facebook page, where you can share the results with your friends. It is also available by calling 1-800-DIABETES (1-800-342-2383), or texting JOIN to 69866 (standard data and message rates apply).
Nearly 26 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes, and about 7 million of them are undiagnosed, according to the National Diabetes Fact Sheet, 2011. Some 1.9 million new cases of diabetes were diagnosed last year in people ages 20 and older. In addition, an estimated 79 million people have prediabetes, which puts them at risk for developing type 2 diabetes and for heart attack and stroke.
